Join The Watkins Samhain Scavenger Hunt

Welcome to the Watkins Samhain Scavenger Hunt!

This year is the first year we are marking the resetting of the Wheel of the Year with a month-long event spanning several locations across the city. Enjoy with your friends as a free Autumn activity or take your special someone on a date to see what you will discover as you walk (or bus) through the burnt orange leaves of London. Like grown-up trick-or-treating, you might return home with a bag full of goodies and surprises!

How it works:

  • Take a look at the map of locations below. You can start anywhere you like.
  • Visit the locations (preferably during business hours) between October 1-31st. Each one has a poster with a QR code on it.
  • Using your phone camera (or an app if your camera doesn’t have code reading capabilities) scan the code. This will present you with a virtual STAMP.
  • Collect them by screenshotting the page. Make sure you keep the timestamp in the screenshot. You must visit at least 3 locations (collect 3 stamps) to qualify for a reward – just like a loyalty card.
  • End your journey at Watkins Books which is a 3 minute walk from Leicester Square Underground Station. It is also close to Covent Garden. Don’t forget to collect the stamp there, too!
  • Show a member of staff your stamps (and be really nice to them!) and they will validate your quest with a reward of assorted goodies from Watkins Publishing and the participating small businesses.
  • If you visit all of the locations on the map you will qualify for an extra-special bonus surprise!
  • On your journey, don’t forget to support these incredible independent businesses by browsing their wares and posting on social media. Tag us @watkinswisdom on Instagram, TikTok and X.

July 11th – Stephen Ellcock at Treadwell’s

British artist Jamie Reid (1947–2023) is most famous for creating the ‘the single most iconic image of the punk era’: The Sex Pistols’ 1977 debut album cover. However, his latter work was heavily rooted in paganism.

In this illustrated lecture, author, curator and image-collector Stephen Ellcock takes a Treadwell’s audience through the full spectrum of Reid’s work. This includes not only his pre-punk, Situationist-inspired agitprop but druidry-inspired pieces created later in life. Reid observed the eight pagan festival dates, holding rituals at his allotment in Liverpool. Druidry also ran in the family – his great uncle was the famous Druid chief George Watson MacGregor Reid, who ‘put Druidry at the heart of the Stonehenge summer solstice’. Afterwards, there will be an informal soirée on the shopfloor with signings for the accompanying new book on Reid’s art.

Time for Magic: A Shamanarchist’s Guide to the Wheel of the Year – co-authored by Stephen Ellcock, John Marchant and Philip Carr-Gomm – is a full-colour 216-page survey of art, memorabilia, reminiscences and analysis. It features key Wheel of the Year artworks alongside famous earlier pieces (including his work for the Sex Pistols).

London, 33 Store St, London WC1E 7BS, UK

Tickets: £10.00 – £22.00

About Time For Magic:

Time for Magic offers an entrancing overview of Jamie Reid’s incredible art, structured around the eight seasonal festivals of the Wheel of the Year (the equinoxes and solstices plus Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh and Samhain). Jamie observed these festivals, holding rituals at his allotment in Liverpool, and focused on this theme in his later paintings. This book features key Wheel of the Year artworks as well as famous earlier pieces, including the pre-punk, Situationist-inspired agit-prop and the work he produced for the Sex Pistols. Curator Stephen Ellcock has selected the art and in his own inimitable creative style arranged it into season-themed chapters, as well as finding images of Druidic ceremonies held by Jamie’s great-uncle, Chief Druid George Watson MacGregor Reid.

Stephen Ellcock in conversation with John Marchant introduces Jamie’s life, legacy and love of making trouble; John Marchant provides captions giving deep insight in Jamie’s work; and Philip Carr-Gomm writes about the Wheel of the Year and how it can help us find a new way of being in this era of climate crisis.

About Stephen Ellcock:

Stephen Ellcock is a London-based online collector and curator of images, writer, researcher and former musician and bookseller who spends most of his time nowadays creating an ever-expanding, virtual museum on Facebook and Instagram. His ongoing attempt at creating the ultimate social media ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ has so far attracted more than 350,000 followers and increasing media attention, not all of which is unwelcome.

About The Life Alignment Cards:

Life Alignment is a system that can be used to release any blocked issues, transform limiting beliefs, and enhance your inner qualities. Life Alignment can be used in many aspects of life and is an inclusive system, which combines elements of ancient and modern wisdom, in a simple and effective way.

An essential part of the Life Alignment system is the concept of Vortex Technology, which has been developed by its founder, Jeff Levin, to facilitate the process of raising the vibrational frequencies of all aspects of our life, such as our body, food, water, environment and land. Vortex technology is imprinted with high vibrational frequencies that work in concert with powerful Light Beings.

This deck is the first tool of its kind: it brings new-found insight to the Vortex Technology and its inherent powers. Elena Arietti, a Life Alignment Academy teacher, was inspired to connect with the energies of the Vortex Cards and, with the contribution of Jeff Levin, the Life Alignment founder, she created these beautiful spiritual messages and affirmation for each Vortex Card. Together they make up the 48 Life Alignment Inspiration Cards.

The deck allows you to connect on a deep and intuitive level with the core energies of Life Alignment, aiming to be a great place to start understanding Life Alignment for beginners, or an inspiring new approach for experienced practitioners to unlock deeper understanding, facilitate connection and bring inspiration.

About the event

*** Please bear in mind our seating space is limited. RSVP does not ensure you will get a seat. PLEASE ARRIVE TIMELY BEFORE 5.30. Later admission will be denied. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. ***

Kabbalah is a tradition that is closely related to Judaism, but which has links also with Ancient Egyptian religion and currents all across the Near and Middle East. Outwardly it was studied and taught principally by Rabbis, but in fact on a more secret level its development was also taken forward by Moslem scholars, Renaissance princes, alchemists of all kind and magicians. It found its expression in the tarot deck and in the esoteric teachings of Aleister Crowley and Dion Fortune.  In a way, it’s all in here and Kabbalah holds the key to all the workings of the universe. We can use it to make sense of our own minds and motivations and become better happier people by relating more consciously to all that is.

Join Dutch teacher Mike Bais as he shows us how we can also use this supremely flexible system to understand the universe and how it works – a system which is  ideally placed to bring science and spirituality back together again after centuries of estrangement.  The exercises and practical teachings here form a crystal clear course of study for anyone willing put in the time and change their lives.
